What's the Story?

Rudd (John Cena) is a successful real estate agent with a loving wife and two teenage sons in LITTLE BROTHER. He's trying to land a co-starring role in a real estate-oriented reality TV show when he gets a call that his brother is in the hospital. Thinking it's his wildly successful big brother, Josh (Christopher Meloni), he and wife Deirdre (Michelle Monaghan) rush to his bedside. There, they find Marcus (Eric André), who was—for a very short period a long time ago—a "Little Brother" to Rudd through a mentoring program. Deirdre takes pity on Marcus and invites him home, but Rudd is annoyed by this accident-prone, near-stranger's intrusion into his family. He doesn't know that his assistant, Mia (Sherry Cola), has been emailing Marcus for years, posing as Rudd. When the reality show producers decide that Marcus makes a great counterpart to Rudd on-screen, Rudd's chances for the starring role are suddenly linked to his relationship with Marcus.

As one of the lead actors admits in end credit scenes, the humor in this film is crude—yet there's a sweetness to the characters and storyline that balance that out to land a satisfying comedy. Cena and André play off each other well in Little Brother, as perturbed straight man and decidedly wacky sidekick. We've seen this pairing in many a buddy comedy, including previous films from both lead actors. What's new and gratifying here is the moral compass provided by Cena's family, and the very funny send-up of reality TV programming.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about what the characters learn about empathy in Little Brother. Why is empathy such an important character strength?

  • The sexual language and humor here can be quite graphic. Does it ever go too far, in your opinion? Who do you think is the intended audience for this humor?

  • The film pokes fun at the stars and misrepresentations of reality television. Do you think that's a fair characterization? Why, or why not?

  • How does the pairing of Cena and André compare with other unlikely duos in buddy comedies you've watched?
