What's the Story?

In LOUIS THEROUX: INSIDE THE MANOSPHERE, the documentary maker travels to the United States and Europe to interview men making huge sums of money from misogynistic and other hateful rhetoric shared with millions of social media followers—many of them teenage boys.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

Kids say ( 1 ):

This is a bleak but important documentary that gains access to some of the men who are filling young boys' social media accounts with misogynistic messaging, or as some call it, "red pill" ideology. Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere will shock some parents, while others already familiar with this online space may not find the answers they were hoping for. While Theroux does push back on some of the toxic rhetoric he hears, the film is likely to be more of a way of starting conversations with impressionable young boys who are vulnerable or who are perhaps already entwined in the space. Skilled at honing an online presence, Theroux is up against men who spend their entire day livestreaming and editing clips into shareable videos. And throughout the documentary, Theroux is constantly having the tables turned on him. While he allows these men to reveal themselves as hateful toward women—despite their protestations of actually "loving women" and knowing what "women really want"—the film feels as though it would have benefited from seeing the real-life effects this toxic masculinity has on women. Perhaps a follow-up documentary from Theroux interviewing the women affected or the teenage boys who consume this content would be more powerful at showing that online behaviors have real-life consequences.
