What's the Story?

Therapist Hanna (Matilda Källström) and celebrity chef Samuel (Charlie Gustafsson) are about to get married in LOVE FOREVER. They've decided to hold the wedding on the island farm of Samuel's parents, Leif (Claes Malmberg) and MajGun (Barbro 'Babben' Larsson). But things go wrong from the get-go, including Hanna's parents' delayed arrival, MajGun's insistence on some outdated traditions, ex-lovers being seated together, accidents, and more. Will the mayhem affect more than just the wedding day for Hanna and Samuel and their families and friends?

It's hard to look past the sexist mores at the core of this tedious romcom, even if they're meant to be humorous. Love Forever has a few funny elements, mostly involving the groom's traditional farmer parents (played by veteran actors Larsson and Malmberg). But most of the comedy falls flat, especially jokes revolving around gender roles, a perpetually frazzled bride, and a husband who's stuck trying to please everyone (the bride accuses him of losing his "balls").

The dramatic elements also misfire, like the appallingly rude father of the bride, an outdated stereotype of the conquering businessman, and the implausibility of his lawyer-turned-housewife spouse. The Swedes deserve better than this.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the stereotypes exploited for comedy (and some drama) in Love Forever. Some of these involve gender roles, while others have to do with regional typecasts in Sweden. Which did you find funny, if any? Were any offensive to you? Why are stereotypes so often used for humor?

  • A lot of movies revolve around weddings. Why? What other films have you watched involving a wedding?

  • How does this compare to other romcoms you've watched? How it is similar or different?
