What's the Story?

In LOVE WITHOUT WALLS, young married couple Paul (Niall McNamee) and Sophie (Shana Swash) struggle to make ends meet as they pursue their dreams of music and photography. When they're evicted from their London flat for failing to pay their rent, they turn to friends and family for help, and eventually travel to the coast in search of work and shelter. As things go from bad to worse, they find themselves attempting to survive on the streets, with just their love and hope to keep them going.

This British drama tackles an important subject but takes a haphazard approach. Love Without Walls follows on from writer-director Jane Gull's 2016 debut feature My Feral Heart, a touching story about a young man with Down syndrome forced into a care home after the death of his mother. In this film, she centers a young couple experiencing homelessness. As the leads, both McNamee and Swash offer heartfelt performances. But the film moves into almost thriller territory late in the day and struggles to reconcile its plot contrivances and dramatic shifts. It has good intentions but veers off track, managing to highlight an enormously relevant issue but not quite hitting the mark in the way the story is told.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the theme of homelessness in Love Without Walls. How did the movie portray homelessness? Did it paint the two lead characters experiencing homelessness in a fair/realistic light? Where might you go if you were unhoused, or what might you do to help others in that situation?

  • Another central theme in the movie is love. Did you think the central relationship was a good example of a loving relationship? How did Paul and Sophie show their love and support for each other during the film?

  • How did the film portray the people around Sophie and Paul—both those they knew and strangers that they asked for help? What did it say about people's attitudes toward homelessness?

  • Discuss the strong language used in the movie. Did it seem necessary, or excessive? What did it contribute to the movie?

  • How were smoking, drinking, and drugs depicted in the film? Were they glamorized? Why does that matter?
