What's the Story?

Lulli (Larissa Manoela) is nearing graduation from medical school alongside boyfriend Diego (Vinicius Redd) and best friend Vanessa (Amanda de Godoi) in LULLI. Complaining that she "never listens," Diego breaks up with her and she gets into repeated trouble on rounds with their teaching doctor Paola (Paula Possani). One such misstep results in an electric shock that gives Lulli the ability to hear people's thoughts. It also gives Diego amnesia, forgetting he broke up with her. Lulli has to decide how best to make use of the situation.

An appealing cast and light tone keep this middling Brazilian comedy afloat, but just barely. Star Manoela -- much funnier in the recent Secret Diary of an Exchange Student -- is hampered by Lulli's script, which seems to want to avoid going too deep. But staying on the surface means we don't get to know any of the characters well enough to feel they're flesh and blood. This is disappointing because some, especially goofy best friend Vanessa (de Godoi) and sweet gay buddy Julio (Malheiro), had potential. Vanessa's ability to mind-read also offered up the opportunity for a lot more interesting scenarios than exploited here.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the ability to read minds like Lulli. Would you like to hear people's thoughts? How could such a power could be used for good or ill?

  • There's a background character who we see repeatedly, first on city buses and later in Lulli's office. Do you think she represents an idea or sector of Brazilian society larger than just the one person?

  • If you watched this film dubbed or with subtitles, how did that affect your viewing experience? Is understanding the original language any more important in a genre like comedy than others? Why or why not?
