Masameer Junior
What's the Story?
In MASAMEER JUNIOR, 6-year-olds Saad, Saltooh, and Trad (all voiced by writer-director Malik Nejer) learn a valuable lesson on their first day of school: Almost everything they do and like will send them to hell. Their teacher explains the only way to avoid that tragic fate is through "good deeds." After initial attempts that lead to chaos in their town, they set out on a quest to a distant country where they plan to achieve the ultimate good deed by getting rid of a source of sinful thoughts and desire. On their journey they meet an assortment of characters that make them reevaluate everything they thought they knew about good and bad.
Is It Any Good?
This Saudi film is one of the most transgressive, hilarious, and sharply observed pieces of social satire to come out in recent years, animated or otherwise. Don't be fooled by the vibrant colors in Masameer Junior, or by the fact that the main characters are 6-year-olds; this is not a movie for young kids. Beneath its imaginative visuals and the pitch-perfect voice work of writer-director Malik Nejer lies a biting critique of everything from social norms to political apathy, delivered with absurdist flair and emotional nuance. The animation is surreal and stylized, constantly pushing the boundaries of the world it's depicting.
What makes the film so compelling is how it refuses to talk down to its audience. The characters are richly drawn (pun intended), the plot twists are unexpected, and the screenplay is layered with ideas that go far beyond childhood hijinks. Rather than mirroring the real world, Masameer Junior distorts and exaggerates it into something almost mythic, and that's where its brilliance lies. Teens who watch it might end up with more questions than answers and, honestly, that's a win. Few films dare to provoke curiosity and discomfort this boldly, all while making you laugh out loud.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the main characters' intentions. Why do they constantly break the rules while being convinced they're doing the right thing?
How does the film use humor to handle complex topics? Did any specific moments make you uncomfortable?
How did the surreal animation affect the storytelling? Did it make the violence seem less threatening? Why, or why not?
