What's the Story?

In MERRY CHRISTMAS, Albert (Vijay Sethupathi) and Maria (Katrina Kaif) meet on Christmas Eve, have a romantic, whirlwind date, and then conspire to cover up Maria's premeditated murder of her abusive husband. The only witness is Maria's tiny daughter who has lost the ability to speak due to her father's abuse, while Albert has his own history with the police as he was previously convicted for his girlfriend's murder. Will the pair get away with it?

Sriram Raghavan is someone capable of brilliance when it comes to thrillers, but the writer-director falters with this adaptation of a French novel. Merry Christmas is beautifully shot, but it fails to up the ante enough for the audience to become fully invested. Central characters Albert and Maria -- played by Sethupathi and Kaif -- have an awkward chemistry that is more fizzle than sizzle, although the script does them no favors. Character actors Vinay Pathak, Pratima Kannan, and Sanjay Kapoor end up as caricatures -- under used and devoid of any heft. As a stand-alone movie, Merry Christmas is an above average experience. But viewed in context of Raghavan's filmography, it does not live up to audience expectations.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about some of the dark themes in Merry Christmas. Were subjects such as domestic and child abuse handled sensitively? Why does that matter?

  • Much of the violence happened off-screen. Did this lessen the impact? If so, why? Does exposure to violent media desensitize kids to violence?

  • The director leaves the film somewhat open ended. What do you think happened next? Did you like this kind of ending? Why, or why not?
