Talking about the Holocaust, the ways in which ordinary people performed extraordinary acts of love or of hate is difficult. It was ordinary people in Denmark who helped over 7,000 Jews escape the Holocaust. It was also ordinary people who betrayed 500 Jews to the occupying German army. This movie focuses on the ordinary people whose acts of love and kindness serve as a beacon for our age. While I wish it were more factually based, the film tells a relatable story of courage. I would encourage all of us to watch this movie and talk about how to respond to evil. Overlook the pained attempts to mimic a Danish accent, and let the moral of the story inform your discussions as a family.
