Mr. Blake at Your Service!
What's the Story?
In MR. BLAKE AT YOUR SERVICE!, widowed British businessman Andrew (John Malkovich) travels to France to stay at a manor house that reminds him of his late wife. Mistaken for a butler, he quickly throws himself into the role, getting to know the inner workings of the home and the people within. From eccentric lady of the manor Nathalie (Fanny Ardant) to the staff—uptight Odile (Émilie Dequenne), gruff Magnier (Philippe Bas), and chaotic Manon (Eugénie Anselin)—everyone is distracted by their own struggles and nobody seems to question his role. As Andrew gets pulled further in, it starts to look like his quest for an ending might actually be a new beginning.
Is It Any Good?
This light, heartwarming movie is full of charm from start to finish. Populated with odd but likable characters, and set amid beautiful surrounds, Mr. Blake at Your Service! is a moving, hopeful drama with a playful tone that makes it an easy—if fairly predictable—watch. Malkovich proves a particularly charismatic lead here, a thoughtful man with an impish nature whose presence brings together a group of lonely, disconnected people. Ardant is watchable as ever as the widowed lady of the house, who has her own quirks and struggles beneath her put-together facade. The rest of the cast are consistently good in their parts, including "Novehka The Cat" as their feline companion, who has his own role in uniting the gang. It's not particularly groundbreaking stuff, but it's a warm, breezy film about connection and second chances that will delight those who come with an open mind and heart.
