What's the Story?
When personal trainer Leo Mathews (Aashim Gulati) is murdered, detective Bhawani Singh (Panjak Tripathi) enters the world of the super-rich in MURDER MUBARAK, as all the suspects are members or employees of a prestigious social club. Interrogating and investigating suspects that range from a famous movie actress to a gardener, Singh discovers the darkness bubbling under the surface of jewels and glitzy cocktail parties.
Is It Any Good?
Murder mysteries in which the rich and famous are the main suspects are nothing new. Agatha Christie made a career out of writing them, and film series like Knives Out have kept them alive in recent years. In Murder Mubarak, director Homi Adajania tries to deliver a film in that spirit, but comes up with an overlong study of characters navigating the class system that doesn't match the quirky comedic tone with which the story is told.
Featuring a huge cast, perhaps more adequate for a miniseries, Murder Mubarak has trouble finding its rhythm. At times it lingers forever by diving into the backstories of characters that don't add much to the plot, and then it rushes into trying to get us back into the main murder mystery. Aashim Gulati shines as the playboy personal trainer whose murder kickstarts the plot. His performance finds the right balance of comedy and cruelty that the rest of the film never lives up to.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how the characters in Murder Mubarak use their high-ranking social position to get away with things. If you were rich, would you try to help others or only help yourself? Why?
One of the characters is shunned and mocked by others for his substance abuse. What would be the compassionate approach to show someone undergoing this issue?
How do Bhawani and Aakash show compassion, integrity, and teamwork? Would you act the way they did if you were in their shoes? How did their behavior compare to the actions of the rest of the characters?
