My Boo
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
MY BOO follows Joe (Sutthirak Subvijitra), a broke gamer who inherits an old, rundown house from his grandfather and quickly realizes he might be able to make money from it. The problem is that the house is actually haunted. Inside live several ghosts, including Anong (Maylada Susri). Instead of being scared away, Joe decides to turn the place into a haunted house attraction and convinces the ghosts to help him. As they work together, Joe learns more about their stories and grows closer to Anong, forming an unusual friendship that slowly becomes something more.
Is It Any Good?
This is a charming ghost romance that starts strong but slowly runs out of steam. My Boo follows the familiar fantasy of a human falling in love with a ghost, a premise that recalls better films like The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, though here the tone begins as a goofy horror comedy before settling into something sweeter. The romance between Joe and Anong gradually becomes the heart of the movie, especially as Joe realizes how impossible their relationship might be. Sutthirak Subvijitra gives Joe an easygoing charm that carries much of the film. What begins with him as a slacker chasing quick money slowly evolves into a story about someone learning responsibility and compassion, even if the object of his affection happens to be a ghost.
The film mostly balances romance, horror, and comedy with confidence, and the haunted house sequences are playful and creepy in a fun way. The trouble comes from pacing. Some supporting characters, especially Pom, are written so broadly that their scenes feel forced, and the movie stretches far beyond the point where its story feels complete. Once the central romance becomes clear, the film continues for long stretches where very little actually happens, draining the lively energy of the opening half. The result is a movie with a delightful premise and a likable lead performance that might have worked far better as a tight 90-minute ghost comedy instead of a much longer, wandering one.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Joe decides to help the ghosts even though everyone else is afraid of them. Why do you think he does that? Have you ever helped someone others were ignoring?
The film suggests that money and success aren't the most important things in life. What do you think actually makes someone happy?
Kong starts out as a bully but changes over time. Why do you think people sometimes act like bullies, and what can help them change?
