What's the Story?

In MY GRANDFATHER CHARLES MANSON, struggling actress and wannabe filmmaker Sophia Maddox (formerly Arguelles) tries to find out what made her grandfather, infamous cult leader and criminal Charles Manson, tick, and whether she has inherited anything from him. Bringing a camera with her to her therapy sessions and sharing private interactions with her father as well as her own private moments, she reveals family dynamics and emotional reactions to revelations along the way. She interviews friends and former followers of Manson, as well as an attorney who prosecuted Manson cases, representatives of a juvenile institution where Manson lived as a boy, and authors who've written about him.

This documentary pieces together a wide assortment of disparate elements, the editing of which could have been even tighter, but the subject and revelations make it a gripping watch. My Grandfather Charles Manson stands apart from much of the true crime content available to stream because it's presented as one woman's psychological journey rather than a historical investigation or analysis. Maddox is trying to come to terms with her own ancestry. She says she wants to understand Manson without becoming an apologist.

She does do her research, interviewing people associated with Manson and his "family" ranch and crime sprees. The interview revealing the institutional abuse and parental abandonment Manson experienced as a child (echoed in her own father's revelations about his childhood) does add perspective. Maddox also shares videos from private moments with her now-estranged father and close-up crying sessions of her processing information. That willingness to (over?) share, surely a trait of her generation, is brave but can feel more TikTok than documentary. Still, it's part of a unique package that works as a whole.

  • Did you learn anything new about Charles Manson in this documentary? Did it change the way you saw him? Did you feel Maddox was trying to excuse his behavior in any way?

  • How did you feel about Maddox's portrayal of her father? By the end of the film, he's not speaking to her, so everything we are told about him comes from her. Is that fair?
