My Mother's Wedding
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
In MY MOTHER'S WEDDING, Navy captain Katherine (Scarlett Johansson), Hollywood actress Victoria (Sienna Miller), and nurse Georgina (Emily Beecham) return to their English countryside home where their mother Diana (Kristin Scott Thomas) is about to tie the knot for the third time. While the prenuptial celebrations make for chaotic fun, they also dig up the three sisters' unresolved childhood feelings about their mother's previous husbands—both Navy pilots who lost their lives at war.
Is It Any Good?
This enjoyable but slightly underwhelming directorial debut from Scott Thomas will likely appeal for its all-star cast more than its particularly memorable plot. Miller and Beecham stand out as the two younger sisters in My Mother's Wedding, while Johansson's character is stoic but one-dimensional, even as she's given the most focus. Her same-sex relationship with Freida Pinto's Jack is refreshing to see, but it's a shame that it's left as underdeveloped as much of the connections here. The bare bones of the material is autobiographic—Scott Thomas herself lost a father and stepfather, who were both Navy pilots, and there's a dedication to them at the end of the film. Written alongside journalist husband John Micklethwait, it's unclear how much of the story is taken from the director's own experience. The screenplay pulls in all the usual cliches of the genre, but lacks poignancy until a thoughtful monologue from Scott Thomas toward the end. That said, it is an entertaining 95 minutes with some light-but-knowing Richard Curtis-style moments that give it a familiar warmth that will appeal to many.
