What's the Story?

Anna de la Vega (Sofia Carson) is taking one year to follow her dreams of studying poetry at Oxford before she settles in to a lucrative career at Goldman Sachs in MY OXFORD YEAR. She has her life planned out, but all that goes askew when she meets handsome doctoral student Jamie (Corey Mylchreest). Their romance might be short-lived, though, for more reasons than one.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

Despite a handsome cast and an inspirational setting, this overly long melodrama is missing a necessary spark. My Oxford Year feels a little low on energy, from the so-so chemistry of its lead couple to the somewhat routine cast of secondary characters. Its messages about life, love, and poetry carry some wisdom but are less subtly expressed than the script seems to hope. The film will surely find a following on Netflix, which has made a small industry out of American-abroad romances. But more could have been made of this story, characters, and setting.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about how poetry is woven into the storyline of My Oxford Year. Sometimes poems read aloud contradict or underscore what characters are experiencing in their own lives. Can you think of any examples?

  • What other films have you watched where characters in love cannot ultimately be together? How does that outcome affect the story as a whole?

  • In the pub scene, a man criticizes Americans and calls Anna a "diversity quota" at Oxford. Did these insults feel realistic for a young Latina to encounter studying abroad? How do you think she handled the situation?
