Not for kids
So many movies from the past I forgot how inappropriate they are and this is one of them. Nudity and sexual innuendos.

Kinda funny
I remember watching this movie as a kid and thinking it was hilarious. It had been at least 20 years since I had last seen it, so when I ran across it at the library I decided to take a trip down memory lane. Whoa!! I don't know where my parents were, but this movie is definitely not for kids. There are some funny parts, but overall, I'd probably not watch it again. Lots of swearing and full frontal nudity. Stick with Christmas Vacation.

Don't watch as not funny and inappropriate
Johnny Carson once said "Chevy Chase couldn't ad-lib a fart after a baked-bean dinner". He must have said this after watching National Lampoon's European Vacation. Then when you layer in the sexual forwardness my screen starved kids walked out with a third of the movie to go.

Funny movie (if you look for small details), but not appropriate for kids
I have watched this movie a number of times, and have found some funny moments. The problem is that those funny moments are hard to find unless you watch the movie more than once and look at the small details. The Griswold (spelled Griswald in this movie) family has won a trip to Europe and visits several countries, having a vacation that is less-than-ideal (as you might expect if you watched any of the other movies in the series). European Vacation is rated PG-13, but should be rated R because it has adult material in it (a few pornographic scenes and plenty of sexual references, along with some coarse language). It's OK for a family where the "kids" are more grown-up (teenagers or older), but it is not a good choice for a young family, or for someone who would be offended by the content.

Funny but not for kids.
There is sexual humor and nudity. Not a lot of language but there is one F word in french. The F word is very rare for PG-13.

It's No Christmas Vacation
It's unfortunate that most current audiences will be introduced to the series via the third installment in the series, Christmas Vacation, primarily because, in continuing the tradition of Family Vacation, this title is very distinctly a National Lampoon movie, full of sexual references and off-color humor, unlike the now-classic Christmas Vacation. This one can be missed and is definitely inappropriate for the pre-teens in the family.
