What's the Story?

In NICE GIRLS, Leo (Alice Taglioni) is desperately trying to solve the murder of her brother. Something isn't right about the way he disappeared. But before she can really get to work, her boss tells her she'll have to work with a partner coming over from Germany. Will Leo be able to get along with her new partner?

Is It Any Good?

The tone is playful, and the setup is initially interesting, but way before credits roll, things get too chaotic and messy. Mostly, there's a charm to the main characters (and their friendship) in Nice Girls, but the overly intricate plot lets them down. The two leads add plenty of levity and goofiness to the proceedings, but the film can't quite juggle this tone with the serious nature of the plot. Many scenes just don't seem necessary or smartly done, with a few of them really pushing the limits of what is believable in terms of normal police procedure and practice.

Being a comedy, these logical improbabilities are supposed to not matter so much, but when things really start to unfurl in the second half of the film, the silliness of the plot, set pieces, and action becomes harder to ignore. Further, the main character will be a hit or miss for many viewers: Leo's gruffness, chain-smoking, clumsiness, and disregard for rules will charm some but likely annoy others.
