This compelling, dark thriller uses violent action sequences to explore themes of gentrification and its impact on working-class families. Based on a book of the same name, Night Always Comes is set across one night. Kirby delivers a strong performance as Lynette, keeping viewers sympathetic to her character despite her increasingly poor decisions. The film's initial setup effectively establishes her motivation to protect her family, including her brother, Kenny (Zack Gottsagen), who has Down syndrome, and their mother, Doreen (Jennifer Jason Leigh). An indelible dark mood permeates every corner of this film, yet it's presented with beautiful cinematography that captures real-life grit with a certain beauty. This creates a compelling contradiction between the unrelenting, uncomfortable atmosphere and the visual elegance. However, the movie struggles to maintain focus on its social commentary, instead relying on contrived action and suspense sequences. While it works as a passable genre entry, the film loses conviction in its original message after the promising opening. So while the movie deals with serious themes about economic desperation and family loyalty, the execution doesn't always match the ambition.
