What's the Story?

NOT ANOTHER CHURCH MOVIE follows multi-hyphenate entrepreneur Taylor Pherry (Kevin Daniels)—which is pronounced "Harry," as the "p" is silent—who's tasked with helping God (Jamie Foxx) and Hoprah Windfall (Luc Ashley) replace her with a worthy successor who will be a beacon and guide to all women. God also encourages Tyler to write a movie, which he does (well, his female assistant actually does it) based on the lives of his wacky women relatives, including larger-than-life MaDude (Daniels again), younger cousin Flora (Tisha Campbell), and others. Meanwhile, the Devil (Mickey Rourke) has plans of his own to thwart God's designs.

Our review:
Parents say ( 2 ):
Kids say ( 1 ):

This meandering parody spoofs Tyler Perry's movies with a forgettable plot and silly gags. Daniels and Rourke have the most memorable parts in Not Another Church Movie, as God and the Devil, respectively, with each trying to influence what happens around the workaholic Pherry. A few moments will elicit laughter, but overall this isn't a laugh-out-loud comedy. The more familiar you are with Perry's various films, the more you'll get all the jokes, but mostly you just need to know his famous character Madea, the types of melodramas he specializes in, and (of course) the man himself. Like many other spoofs (The Starving Games, Not Another Teen Movie), this is an easy comedy to skip.
