Nowhere
What's the Story?
Pregnant Mia (Anna Castillo) and her husband Nico (Tamar Novas) are on the run in a dystopian landscape at the start of NOWHERE. When they're separated, Mia has to rely on her own survival skills. This becomes even more apparent when she finds herself completely alone. Her situation appears dire, and nobody is coming to save her.
Is It Any Good?
This high-concept thriller sets itself up for a tough challenge but manages to maintain momentum and avoid many lulls through solid acting and just enough surprises. The social context in the intro to Nowhere feels especially contrived, a means to an end.
But when the action zeroes in on the main event, things turn. Spanish actress Castillo follows in the footsteps of Kaitlyn Dever's turn in No One Will Save You or Melanie Laurent in French thriller Oxygen. All feature one woman in constant peril, camera close-ups, and performances driven by action and reaction more than dialogue. Nowhere has a couple of twists explicitly designed to shock, and your enjoyment of the film will depend on how much you're willing to suspend disbelief and just go along for the ride.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the context that sends Mia and Nico on the run in Nowhere. How would you explain what was going on in Spain in the beginning of the film? Do you think a society could actually get to such a point? Why or why not?
There are a couple of scenes in this film that are designed to shock. Which would you highlight, and what was your reaction? Did these scenes amplify the intended suspense of the movie, or do you think the filmmaker went too far? Explain.
What other films have you seen where the action centers on one main character stuck in a single location? How do these films keep your attention?
