What's the Story?

OFF TRACK 2 is a story about people with money in the bank, a roof over their heads, and food on the table and the problems they seem to invent in their otherwise really nice lives. Daniel (Fredrik Hallgren) and Klara (Rakel Warmlander) were struggling to have a child in the previous film. Now their daughter is 3 but they are unhappy about their lives together. Their therapist suggests their relationship might improve if Klara joined Daniel in preparing to do a 200-mile race that has been taking up all his spare time. He hates that idea because it would mean he couldn't achieve the fast pace he is working on. Lisa (Katia Winter), Daniel's sister, is also training for the race. She was an alcoholic who couldn't manage her life. She had bad boyfriends and left a nice husband and her child. Now she's three years sober but psychologically struggling. So even though she is in a seemingly solid relationship with fiancé Anders (Ulf Stenberg), and her daughter is happy, Lisa is looking for ways to blow up her life.

Is It Any Good?

It's odd to choose to make a sequel about a group of people who in the first movie were so utterly dull and inconsiderate, only to present them as just as disagreeable in the second movie. In Off Track 2, Daniel is still distant and superior, clueless as to how to be kind, warm, and compassionate. Lisa is still reckless and irresponsible, ready to jeopardize her relationship and her fiancé's and daughter's happiness. Klara is still a bit of a pill although fully justified in wanting to leave the aloof and selfish Daniel. At the end of the day, it feels as if Daniel and Klara are two people who no one should be married to. The question is: Does an audience want to go another round with these people? Unlikely.

  • Families can talk about the many problems the characters face. One couple is in therapy to save their marriage. How involved does the husband seem to be in the effort? What is the message to the audience about his commitment to the marriage?

  • The second couple is about to get married until someone tells the woman that all men cheat. She seems to completely lose her enthusiasm for her partner after hearing this. Why do you think she chooses to suddenly stop trusting her loving partner?

  • Alcoholism is a theme. Do you think the film presents the topic accurately? Why, or why not?
