Oh, Hi!
What's the Story?
In OH, HI!, Iris (Molly Gordon) and Isaac (Logan Lerman)—who are in the throes of a new liaision—take a romantic weekend trip to upstate New York. But when the two realize that they've had a significant miscommunication, Iris sets out to reset their relationship.
Is It Any Good?
Star/co-writer Gordon and director/co-writer Sophie Brooks have a bright future ahead of them, based on the quality of their anti-romcom. Inspired by the duo's own exasperations with the dating scene, Oh, Hi! is a wildly creative take on how the pursuit of love can be both maddening and marvelous.
The story takes a bold, narrative swing—one that might falter in less capable hands, but here it lands with empathy and insight. We understand Iris' feelings and get a glimpse of how well-meaning guys can get labeled as jerks. Certainly, thankfully, this isn't everyone's story, but the chaotic dynamic between Iris and Isaac is darkly charming, uncomfortably resonant, and wickedly funny.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about why romantic comedies are popular. Can watching a stream of romantic fantasies create unrealistic expectations? Do you think movies like Oh, Hi! are an antidote?
What's the point of dating? Do you think Isaac was wrong in his so-called "softboy" approach, or is he being a considerate date? Iris interpreted some of Isaac's behaviors—like cooking a dinner of scallops—to mean that he was her boyfriend. What do you think are actual signs of moving to commitment status?
How can miscommunication lead a relationship off track? Why do you think people sometimes feel they can't say what they're really feeling? Are there times to keep your thoughts to yourself? What are tips for effective communication?
Molly Gordon and Sophie Brooks wrote the film together based on their own frustrations with the dating world and then cast their friend Geraldine Viswanathan as Iris' best friend, Max. Do you think these real-life friendships helped the movie succeed? Why, or why not?
Do you think the film would have been different if the director and/or writer was a man? Why, or why not?
