Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
PAVANE centers on Mi-jung (Ko Ah-sung), a reserved department store employee who lives quietly and keeps people at a distance. Her carefully controlled world shifts when she meets Yo-han (Byun Yo-han), a loud, impulsive parking attendant who pulls her into his orbit, along with Kyung-rok (Moon Sang-min), a new employee. As their friendships deepen and romantic feelings complicate things, Mi-jung is forced to confront her isolation and decide whether she's willing to open herself up to connection.
Is It Any Good?
This Korean romantic drama wants to chart the passage from early-twenties uncertainty into something steadier and more adult, circling friendship, desire, and self-worth over time. Pavane gestures toward the romantic melancholy of films like Never Let Me Go or One Day, but it never quite earns that emotional sweep. Instead, it settles into a slow rhythm. Scenes linger without deepening, conversations hover without consequence, and every time the story approaches transformation, it retreats.
Mi-jung is presented as quietly complex, yet the screenplay gives her little beyond withdrawal. Each near-breakthrough dissolves into repetition, flattening what should feel like growth. The character resembles the very structure of the film, which also flirts with subverting beauty standards by contrasting her with more conventionally glamorous coworkers, but still frames her identity through that comparison. It critiques desirability while quietly circling around it. There's an observational drama buried somewhere here about loneliness and connection, but it never sharpens into something urgent.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Mi-jung struggles with letting people in. Why do you think some people build emotional walls, and what helps them feel safe enough to lower them?
Yo-han is outgoing but misunderstood. Have you ever judged someone based on how they act in public? What did you learn later about them?
Kyung-rok stands up for his friends even when it's uncomfortable. When is loyalty a strength, and when can it become complicated?
