A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this movie.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Paw Patrol: Jet to the Rescue is a Paw Patrol adventure -- and standalone feature -- with some minor threat and peril, but nothing untoward for its target audience. This adventure sees female pup Skye (voiced by Lilly Bartlam) take charge of the mission. She and the other pups must try to stop a plot to steal a gem from a princess. But to do so, Skye must overcome her fear of eagles, which she achieves by showing great courage. The film has a number of exciting scenes and a fun, more involved story that may still grab the attention of Paw Patrol fans who might have outgrown the TV show. Yet despite a slightly more grown-up, action-packed feel, it remains suitable for young fans, too. As well as courage, there is a strong message of teamwork. Paw Patrol member Tracker (David López) occasionally uses Spanish phrases, a perk for both Spanish speakers and kids open to exposure to languages other than their own.
What's the Story?
In PAW PATROL: JET TO THE RESCUE, the team are in town for the 10th birthday of Princess of Barkingburg (voiced by Caoimhe Judd). When the princess's pampered pet pooch, Sweetie (Anya Cooke), and her cousin, The Duke of Flappington (Ashton Leon Frank), scheme to steal a magical gem and seize power, the ever-helpful Paw Patrol jump in to help. But will Skye (Lilly Bartlam) be able to overcome her fear of eagles to return the gem to its rightful owner?
Is It Any Good?
There's a strong cinematic quality to this pup adventure that sets it apart from the regular TV series. With Paw Patrol: Jet to the Rescue young fans who might feel like they've grown out of the series can rejoin for this standalone adventure and feel the show has grown up with them. There's exciting set pieces, a thief mystery, scheming villains, clever comedy, and fist-pumping successes. And all while never sacrificing what makes Paw Patrol a universally watchable show. There's no extra threat or violence, and where there is peril, it's handled sensitively without losing any of the dramatic impact.
For example, when the Duke of Flappington uses the magical sceptre to pluck buildings out of the ground to make his new sky kingdom, there's no panic. But kids of any age can understand quickly that visually, something's not right. Similarly, the stakes are high when a clock tower hovers over a castle, a simple shot that gives scale to the potential destruction. Don't worry, Paw Patrol are of course on hand to save the day. Only this time in their flying jets, which give a futuristic, neon-soaked pizazz to the set pieces. In terms of our heroes, it's Skye who is front and center here. She overcomes her fear of eagles to lead the gang, and the movie, to victory.
