What's the Story?

Pia (Simone Ashley) is a struggling artist with a failing photography studio in London in PICTURE THIS. She runs the studio with her best friend Jay (Luke Fetherston). Her sister Sonal (Anoushka Chadha) is about to be married to the lovely Sam (Eben Figueiredo) in a celebration that, as per their Indian tradition, will last weeks, bringing her divorced parents, Laxmi (Sindhu Vee) and Mukul (Adil Ray), together. Her parents are concerned that Pia should also meet a man and get married. When a diviner predicts she will meet her partner over the next five dates, the entire family comes together to set Pia up with a series of men. What they don't realize is that she is still in love with high school sweetheart Charlie (Hero Fiennes Tiffin), who is Sam's best man.

This remake has all the ingredients of a great romcom, but it never quite gets past just good enough. Picture This star Simone Ashley has undeniable screen presence and solid comedic timing, all undermined by the uneven pacing and tone of this film. Sequences with potential for laughs —like a blind date with a flat-earther yoga instructor played by Ted Lasso's Phil Dunster—fall unnecessarily flat. Pia has better chemistry with her gay best friend than with love interest Charlie. Fiennes Tiffin is subdued here and, despite marketing, feels barely present in this film. What gives Picture This its pleasant energy is Ashley's charisma and the warmth of her character's extended family and customs.
