What's the Story?

Brian (Kevin James) is doing his best to parent stepson Lucas (Benjamin Pajak), but both are basically misfits, in PLAYDATE. When the pair meet strapping father-son due Jeff (Alan Ritchson) and CJ (Banks Pierce) at the park, they see something lacking in themselves. Jeff wants to be immediate best buds, but something is off. As the day unfolds, Brian realizes Jeff and CJ aren't exactly who they say they are. In fact, they're being followed by dangerous hit men. Now, all four will need to stick together to escape with their lives.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

Commentary on fatherhood, toxic masculinity, and military culture can be found buried in this silly high-jinx buddy flick with nonstop action. James and Ritchson make great foils in Playdate, and the bloopers in the end credits make it clear they had fun filming it. This is a movie by, about, and for boys and men. Jeff's unresolved daddy issues bubble back up when he discovers he's a dad, while Brian's stepdad status raises all his own insecurities—explained in funny open scenes involving kids' lacrosse and toxic workplaces. The over-the-top fight scenes, language, and intentional inappropriateness won't be for everyone, but the movie will have no trouble finding its audience.
