Predator 2
What's the Story?
In PREDATOR 2, LAPD detective Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover) investigates a series of brutal killings during a gang war and heatwave in a futuristic Los Angeles, only to discover that the killer is a deadly alien predator hunting humans for sport. As the body count and heat rise, Harrigan must confront both the creature and a secret government team trying to trap it.
Is It Any Good?
This is a surprisingly prescient science fiction horror film that's unfortunately riddled with racist stereotypes. Predator 2 delivers pulpy thrills with more emotional weight than expected thanks to Danny Glover, who is magnetic as Lieutenant Harrigan, channeling the intensity of a noir antihero rather than a typical action lead. He brings depth, restraint, and grit to ground the escalating chaos, without ever diving into self-parody. The film moves with urgency, its visual effects still hold up, and the structure is tight, keeping the momentum going without unnecessary detours. It may have been dismissed on release (it failed to surpass its predecessor at the box office), but its commentary on police violence and government corruption lands with eerie relevance.
The depiction of gang culture is hard to watch, relying on lazy and harmful caricatures, but the film also gives us a rare trio of leads of color—Glover, Rubén Blades, and María Conchita Alonso—who are all treated with dignity and agency. The story may lean into absurdity, but it never loses its edge and remains quite entertaining, despite its shortcomings. Teenagers might enjoy the wild action and suspense, but the brutal violence and intense imagery make this one best suited for older viewers.
