What's the Story?
In PROPELLER ONE-WAY NIGHT COACH, 9-year-old Jeff (Clark Shotwell) is beside himself with excitement to take his first flight with his mom (Kelly B. Eviston). They're flying across country, from New York to Los Angeles, where his mom has been promised help finding acting roles. But Jeff knows that might not work out. Still, he's going to enjoy the flying experience and, either way, his life will never be the same again.
Is It Any Good?
This Travolta-written and -directed film lovingly captures a specific moment in a little boy's life, but the limited story and action struggle to keep the attention. Travolta has a cameo toward the end of Propeller One-Way Night Coach, but the bulk of the film centers on a little boy and his loving but adrift mom. We see events through the boy's eyes, and newcomer Shotwell perfectly embodies the wide-eyed innocence and obsessions of childhood as well as those moments of comprehension of the complicated, potentially cruel adult world waiting for him. In that sense, the journey is a metaphor, but it's one that probably works better on page (or as a short) than a feature-length film.
