It's delightful to see how much a documentary filmmaker loves their subject, and director Carlos Armella sure seems to adore Rafa Márquez. Of course, Rafa Márquez: El Capitán is by no means merely a love fest for the Mexican soccer legend. Through archival footage and interviews (Márquez's mom is a scene-stealer), Armella explores how Márquez was almost surprised to discover he could make a living through soccer, the thing he loved the most.

Marquez's skills are highlighted in stunning archival moments, which Armella carefully balances with the allegations of corruption that almost led the player to disgrace. This is a story of triumph, resilience, and how glorious a sport can become when played by someone with endless passion. Kids will undoubtedly be inspired by Márquez's story in a film they can enjoy with their parents.
