This is a coming-of-age story that imparts important life lessons through a mix of drama and humor. Raising Victor Vargas captures the relationships among Latino teens with simplicity and authenticity in a documentary-like style. The choice of handheld close-ups creates an intimate feeling that immerses viewers in the daily lives of Victor and his eccentric Dominican family. The overexposed, washed-out cinematography reinforces the atmosphere of the working-class neighborhood where the characters live. Beyond its visual style, the movie warmly and poignantly portrays the awkwardness of young love, as well as the fears and challenges of growing up. The performances are convincing, and the locations ground the story in believability—crucial for a film where authenticity is at its heart. Events in Victor's life lead him to approach relationships more genuinely, and as the main character's perspective evolves, so does the viewer's perception of him.
