What's the Story?

Nataanii (Kusem Goodwind) and Jimmy (Kauchani Bratt) are best friends who have grown up together playing basketball on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico in REZ BALL. When something happens to Nataanii, Jimmy must manage his grief as well as his new role as captain of his high school basketball team. The team has the potential to make it to the state championships under coaching from former WNBA player Heather Hobbs (Jessica Matten), but the disadvantages of their community make it more complicated. Jimmy's mother, Gloria (Julia Jones), struggles with alcoholism, meaning Jimmy has to keep a part-time job. One teammate already has a child. The team doesn't have the funds other teams do. And Coach Hobbs is actively seeking work elsewhere.

This feel-good sports film stars a cast of mostly unknown actors in a heartwarming tale with important social messages. Hollywood is chock-full of remakes and sequels, yet a film like Rez Ball shows the inspiration to be found in real-life stories. That in itself doesn't necessarily make for an entertaining movie, but director and co-scripter Sydney Freeland, who is Navajo herself and originally from Gallup, has put together a skillfully paced film that balances action, drama, and humor. And Director of Photography (DP) Kira Kelly beautifully captures the geographical distinctiveness (and golden light) of the Four Corners region and the infamous Shiprock formation, as well as the fast-paced, on-court action.

Freeland splices in serious issues—unemployment, alcoholism, impoverishment, suicide—as what they are: a part of life on the rez. But there's also more to that life, as this movie tenderly conveys, including community, tradition, a focus on family, intergenerational support, and, yes, basketball. Freeland has spoken publicly about getting backing from Netflix before casting the film, and she struck gold with the lead cast, particularly Bratt as Jimmy, Jones as his mom finding her own strength, and Matten as the coach who is torn between her career ambitions and her ties to the rez. All the elements come together in an entertaining and gratifying film.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about how the team members and their wider community in Rez Ball demonstrate the positive outcomes that can stem from teamwork. What is blocking them from working as a team at the start?

  • How does Jimmy's idea to use the Navajo language bring the team together and help them succeed?

  • What role does the setting play in this story? Can you offer examples?

  • Why do you think Nataanii makes the decision he does? What can a person do if they have a friend who seems depressed or even suicidal? Where could you go for help?

  • The film is based on a book, which in turn stemmed from a newspaper article. Have you ever read a book or newspaper story you thought would make a good movie?
