What's the Story?

ROSE OF NEVADA is the story of young men Nick (George MacKay) and Liam (Callum Turner) living in a small, remote village in Cornwall, looking for work. One morning a local man (Edward Rowe) discovers a fishing boat that has been missing for 30 years and decides to put it to use. He hires Nick and Liam to be part of the crew, alongside a weathered but experienced captain (Francis Magee). But when the boat returns, Nick and Liam find their lives transformed.

This British drama with sci-fi elements is the latest work by Mark Jenkin and is perhaps his most accessible film to date, with strong performances from MacKay and Turner. That's not to say that Rose of Nevada has none of the filmmaker's style and vision that made Bait and Enys Men such intriguing pieces of work. Shot on 16 mm with a scratched aesthetic and voices dubbed in post, it's as though the film has been found at the bottom of the sea, accidentally caught up in a fishing net, covered in seaweed. It feels unmistakably of a bygone era, even more so as the film's mystery develops into something of a ghost story. Jenkin presents the story as a mystery, though how one interprets it demands contemplation, with overarching themes of death, memories, grief, and nostalgia.

  • Discuss the strong language used in the movie. What does it contribute? Is a certain kind of language expected in a film like this?

  • Are drinking and smoking glamorized here? Are there realistic consequences for their use? Why does that matter? How have attitudes changed—particularly toward smoking—from some of the time periods depicted in this film?
