What's the Story?

This slow-burn British drama focuses more on its central boxer's choices than on the fights themselves. While Salvable includes some action to keep things spicy—offering a glimpse into the brutal world of unlicensed underground boxing—its heart lies with Kebbell's Sal. He's found a father figure in his trainer, Welly (James Cosmo), but remains vulnerable to the return of a bad influence from his past: LaBeouf's Vince, recently released from prison. The story offers plenty of scope for families to discuss decisions and their consequences, thanks to its nonjudgmental portrayal of flawed characters. Thoughtful rather than action-packed, it's a compelling drama with strong performances.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the violence in Salvable. Was it exciting? Did you find it uncomfortable due to its realistic nature? Does exposure to violent media desensitize kids to violence?

  • Discuss the relationship between Vince and Sal. Why do you think Vince had a hold over Sal? What do you think it means to be a "good friend"?

  • Discuss the strong language used in the movie. Did it seem necessary, or excessive? What did it contribute to the movie? Is a certain level of language expected in a film like this?

  • The movie is set in the early 2000s. What was different about the technology the characters used that set that era apart from today? Why do you think writers sometimes choose to set movies in a pre-smartphone era?
