What's the Story?

SAYEN: LA RUTA SECA takes place a month after the events in Sayen, a time by which Sayen (Rallen Montenegro) has turned into a wanted fugitive and deemed a terrorist. Meanwhile, Sayen is trying to uncover a plot involving a huge corporation and government officials who are trying to extract precious minerals from ecosystems in the Atacama Desert.

In many ways, the Sayen series is shaping into a Chilean The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It keeps following its heroine as she attempts to seek justice for the murder of her grandmother while aiding her people who are being exploited by international corporations. Although it's less thrilling and more meditative than its predecessor, Sayen: La Ruta Seca takes its heroine to the region of the Atacama Desert, which makes for some stunning vistas where director Alexander Witt has a blast staging chase sequences.

It's clear that the Sayen series has more chapters to go, and by now the film seems to be following an effective formula that makes watching the next one an inevitability for anyone who's watched both. Rallen Montenegro in the title role continues revealing new shades to a character that could have been reduced to a cipher. She has moments of raw emotion in this film that make her as impressive as any of the Chilean landscapes.
