What's the Story?

In SCARECROW, Monet (Judy Ann Santos) is trying to care for her children while mourning the recent loss of her father. Meanwhile, her mother, Rosa, has an opinion about everything going on in the house. And when the father's former wife shows up, things really start to go wrong.

While there are a few thrills, the horror is generally lackluster and uninventive in this lower-budget evil spirit/ghost story. Deaths are relatively quick and none of them linger (lest the special effects budget start to get too big!), there are no full explanations for why and how exactly these hauntings are occurring (who wants exposition dumps anyway?), and when people start disappearing one by one, no one really seems to notice or worry (they seem to be in a perpetual state of "what's going on?").

Also, the film tries to pull off a fun twist of sorts, but for most seasoned horror fans (and for most audiences) this "twist" is easily and obviously predicted. Viewers may cringe because the film thinks it's being clever when it's not. There's simply not much here that makes this film worth your time.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about violence in horror movies. In Scarecrow, what were the most effective scary parts? Why were these moments scary and others not so scary?

  • Do you feel like the reason for the hauntings and the bad things happening were explained enough? What do you think could have helped?

  • Are you satisfied with the ending? Why, or why not?
