While the Main Character is bitter, foul-mouthed, drinks too much and is suicidal, the message is that he is in pain. He is giving up. The boy teaches him to move on. To keep pushing forward. But more importantly the message at the end is about integrity, courage and character.

This film feels like the model for Cracked.com's Trailer for Every Oscar-Winning Movie Ever. From the score to the courtroom style antics at the end and the cheers in unison. Really? Cheering like it was Chariots of Fire or Hoosiers? Pacino acts well in the role, and the anger, depression, and suicide of veterans is very real, but the rest of the source material feels very contrived. A lot of showboating with a Musical Score to back it up.
