Sister Midnight
What's the Story?
In SISTER MIDNIGHT, after an arranged marriage, Uma (Radhika Apte) moves to a new city, where she refuses to conform to the gender norms surrounding her.
Is It Any Good?
Apte showcases impeccable comic timing as the main character, Uma, in this entertaining dark comedy. Sister Midnight is unlike any movie set in India in recent times, and writer-director Karan Kandhari deserves much praise for pulling off this genre-bending feminist caper. It is, however, the first half that holds more coherence with its commentary on gender roles and female agency. In the second half, the film meanders and loses some steam in what's perhaps a case of "biting off more than they could chew." But it remains a stellar effort nonetheless. What stands out most is the sisterhood between Uma and her friends. Her neighbor, Sheetal (Chhaya Kadam), starts out teaching her how to cook, but ultimately becomes her partner in crime (literally). Uma's initial hesitation (and even some fear) when a group of transgender women try to talk to her is quickly supplanted by a quiet friendship so fierce that they risk life and limb for her. Slowly, she grows to the full extent of her offbeat self—occupying space unapologetically, becoming so much bigger than patriarchy ever wanted her to be. And that is beautiful to watch.
