What's the Story?

In SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE, local coal-man Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy), is a devoted husband and father, who runs his own successful business. But on one fateful day, he makes a delivery to a locla convent, where he discovers a young girl, which starts an unraveling of a dark and disturbing truth, that seems near impossible to reveal.

Set in Ireland in 1985, this is a strikingly profound and subdued drama that manages to focus on real-life horror and disturbing themes in an understated manner. In many ways, this approach, taken by Belgian filmmaker Tim Mielants, makes Small Things Like These all the more affecting. It helps that it's based on such an emotionally driven novel—by Claire Keegan—as well as some remarkable and stirring performances. Murphy is simply breathtaking, conveying such conflict and complexity, often without the use of dialogue, such is the quiet nature of his character. Emily Watson also provides a sensational supporting turn, leaving a truly indelible mark on the viewer despite a limited amount of screen time. What happened at the Magdalene Laundries is devastating and hard to fathom—young women, who were deemed "promiscuous," were effectively imprisoned in an institution and subsequently abused. But this film is as much about the silencing of those who knew, as much as it was about what happened behind those walls, making for a compelling, if uncomfortable, watch.
