What's the Story?
In STILL LIFE, John May (Eddie Marsan) works for the local authority, tracking down the relatives of people who die alone. Saving their photos, writing their eulogies, and attending their funerals when nobody else will, he dedicates all his time (and a little too much of the council's money) to giving people the send off they deserve. But when he's let go from his job due to financial concerns, he concentrates all his efforts on his final case, that of fellow loner Billy Stoke. Can connecting with Billy's estranged daughter Kelly (Joanne Froggatt) and those he knew long ago bring meaning into John's own life?
Is It Any Good?
Director Uberto Pasolini creates a quiet, intimate character study of a man so focused on others' lives that his own becomes a mere fragment. Marsan is perfectly cast and gives an impressively nuanced performance as the lone figure at the center of Still Life. His world is one of stark environments of greys and browns, hours mapped out by routine and repetition, where he constantly faces the bleak realities of the recently deceased and the coldhearted responses of the few people they've left behind. He finds and creates meaning where he can, saving dead people's photographs in an album, piecing together their lives to write eulogies, and attending endless funerals where he's the sole mourner. It's a lonely place, detached from the living, but in that bleakness the film shows the impact of an unexpected connection, a moment of warmth, a smile—or a brightly colored cardigan. All come in the form of Froggatt's Kelly, the estranged daughter of John's final case, who brings burdens of her own alongside her glimmer of light. The story may seem slight, but it's incredibly impactful, and the tearjerker ending won't be the predictable one viewers expect.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about what made John's job so important to him in Still Life. Did you see similarities between him and some of the people who had died? Why do you think some people take pleasure in doing things for others, even if they're not always acknowledged for it?
John showed empathy, compassion, and perseverance in the time and effort he spent dedicated to those who had died, and in giving them the best possible send off. Why are these important character strengths generally?
The film is slow and quiet, yet has a strong emotional impact. Which parts in particular did you find the most powerful and why? Can you think of other movies that take a similarly calm, gentle approach to a character study? Why do you think this can be such an effective technique?
