What's the Story?

In STREET FLOW 2, brothers Demba (Kery James), Soulaymann (Jammeh Diangana), and Noumoke (Bakary Diombera) are each trying to rebuild their lives after the explosive consequences of the first film. But old problems continue, despite their best efforts. Their mother isn't doing too well, either. With the youngest brother seemingly heading down a dangerous path, how will the older brothers convince him that crime doesn't pay?

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

While it isn't absolutely necessary to see the first film, it would greatly help. Unfortunately, though, Street Flow 2 still wouldn't be worth it for crime drama or French drama fans. Besides a tacked-on brief commentary about the injustice and racism of police brutality ("we have our own George Floyds in France"), there isn't much here that hasn't been done a thousand times before. The three brothers are watchable, charming, and interesting, but their arcs aren't, and by the end, only some viewers will be sticking around to see which of them succeeded in their goals. While part of the ending suggests an open interpretation, the fact that most viewers won't care either way doesn't say a lot about the development of that character.

Perhaps the most compelling character arc is about the youngest brother and one of his teachers, the latter of whom tries to get him to read a particular novel that she hopes would speak to him. But this side story gets lost and forgotten in the final third act, and the film suffers because of this abandonment. Some of the detours the film makes, like to Senegal for a funeral and burial, or to the youngest brother's school, seem like they could've been utilized much more or integrated into the main plot more interestingly rather than being minor detours that briefly stop any traction that the main story tries to maintain.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about violence in crime dramas. Did any of the violence in Street Flow 2 surprise or shock you? Did these moments of violence make the film better? Why or why not?

  • Why do you think Demba couldn't let old tensions die? He could've walked away, but he didn't. What do you think pulled him back so violently?

  • Do you think Noumoke's teacher helped him? What lesson was she trying to teach him? Did he learn that lesson?
