Tafiti: Across the Desert
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
Inspired by author Julia Boehme's popular German children's book series, TAFITI: ACROSS THE DESERT follows brave meerkat Tafiti (voiced by Cosima Henman), who's on a quest across the African desert to retrieve a magical flower to save his grandpa from a deadly snake bite. Loyal but stubborn bush pig Bristles (Steve Hudson) follows along, teaching Tafiti the value of friendship on their adventures.
Is It Any Good?
They're cute, but this German children's book-inspired meerkat and pig duo doesn't quite measure up to the The Lion King's beloved Timon and Pumba. That's not to say that Tafiti: Across the Desert doesn't have charm. The bright visuals, vastly changing landscapes, strong friendship themes, and animal fun facts will likely make it appealing to younger viewers. But while this tale of animal adventures in the African desert means well, the B-rated story, kissing scenes, and over-the-top use of the word "stupid" are the parts most likely to linger after the sun sets on the savannah. Most viewers will likely choose to stick with the 1994 blockbuster buddies for the long haul.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the role of friendship in Tafiti: Across the Desert. Do you think that Tafiti could have completed his quest without Bristles? What does this film say about choosing friends for yourself instead of listening to others' fears?
Why do you think kids' movies often focus on the theme of friendship? What makes someone a good friend? Can someone be a good friend even if they're different from you? Why, or why not?
Why do you think that Bristles wants to be Tafiti's friend, even when Tafiti isn't kind to him? Why do you think that Tafiti keeps pushing Bristles away at first? At what point does Tafiti start to see Bristles differently?
