What's the Story?
Set in the 1970s/'80s in small-town USA, TAPAWINGO follows 30-year-old Nate Skoog (Jon Heder), an awkward, eccentric guy with a part-time job who's still living with his mom and hanging out with his best friend, Will (Jay Pichardo). When Nate unexpectedly becomes the bodyguard for his boss's misfit teen son, Oswalt (Sawyer Williams), the older man finds himself in the crosshairs of the town's family of bullies.
Is It Any Good?
If you gave Napoleon Dynamite a sequel, it would probably look a lot like the absurd comic satire that is Tapawingo. Very much in Napoleon Dynamite star Heder's indie wheelhouse, this over-the-top but earnest film is quirky, offbeat, and nostalgically funny. Heder is likely to delight viewers again with his deadpan delivery, signature awkwardness, and physical comedy in director Dylan K. Narang's love letter to the 1970s and '80s. What's even better is that, underneath the layers of lighthearted satire and stupid but satisfying comedy, there's a deeper, earnest message about finding your way. Just try not to fall into the trap of constantly comparing it to Napoleon Dynamite, because it wants to be its own thing, not just an homage to (or rip-off of) a cult classic.
