What's the Story?
In TERE ISHK MEIN, Mukti (Kriti Sanon) is a research scholar who studies the volatile, violent Shankar (Dhanush) for her thesis, hoping to understand and reform him. Years later, the two reunite in a war zone—she's now a psychologist, he's a fighter pilot—reigniting their troubled dynamic.
Is It Any Good?
From throwing research ethics out of the window to glamorizing violence as romance, this Indian Hindi-language drama disappoints on multiple levels. Tere Ishk Mein makes no sense, coming across like a terrible AI slop mish-mash of director Aanand L. Rai's earlier works. Then there's the bizarre casting of Dhanush as Shankar, who has to convince audiences he is of college age during a section of the movie when he was 41 years old at the time of filming. His dialogue delivery through clenched teeth also becomes jarring. Then there's Sanon as the put-upon Mukti, who is simply unwatchable. The movie's sudden tonal shifts between comedy, romance, and violence are enough to give the viewer whiplash. The storyline frequently switches to extreme plot lines and divides the film into half a dozen unrelated chunks, resulting in a story so fragmented it barely exists.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the violence in Tere Ishk Mein. Did you find it exciting and thrilling, or over-the-top? Does exposure to violent media desensitize kids to violence?
Discuss the relationship between Shankar and Mukti. Was it affectionate? Respectful? Parents, talk to your teens about your own values regarding sex and relationships.
How was smoking and drinking depicted in the film? Was it glamorized? Why does that matter?
