The Amityville Horror (1979)

This 1979 horror classic is scary, has some gore.

This movie follows a family that moves into a “perfect” house with their kids. Then some weird stuff starts to happen, like a window randomly closing on a kids hand, bugs swarm around a window than disappear. Then somehow the house drives the dad insane.

This movie is REALLY good, would definitely recommend this to horror movie lovers.

Mundane Haunted House Film Skimps on Scares

Other than some random bursts of violence, The Amityville Horror is a largely dull affair that falls flat in almost every way. Forgettable and bland, this scary ‘chiller’ really doesn’t hold up like other classic 70’s films such as The Exorcist and Black Christmas. James Brolin and Margot Kidder (who was in Black Christmas) try their best but fail to elevate a lazy script and a scare-free flick. Not bad in the sense it has horrific acting or it is poorly made, but sometimes the most boring horror films are what you should avoid the most.

Incredbile score, great perfomances, and scary final sence help otherwise dull movie

This famous horror classic is bleak and depressing and in most parts, dull. However it has one of the best scores ever, good prefomances, a great one by John Brolin, and truly scary final 20 minuites.

Pretty decent, scary haunted house movie.

This movie is okay, with bits of violence, and the overall horror aspect is pretty high. I wouldn't have young teens watch this, and stick to the older ones as this movie is very frightening and intense.

Poorly aged 70's haunted house movie is a disappointment.

Coming into this movie I had high expectations, however I was disappointed to find this film boring, and lacking atmosphere. The movie has not at all aged well and as a result most of the "scary" effects are either extremely tired or cliched. Parents also don't need to be concerned about to much in terms of letting their kids watch this, if they are older than 13 it is very unlikely that they would find this scary in the least. The only real concern is at the start of the movie where a reenactment of the real Amityville massacre is shown, though the violence is very quick cut the idea of a man killing his family and the knowledge that this really happened is disturbing.
