What's the Story?

In THE BALLAD OF WALLIS ISLAND, lottery winner Charles Heath (Tim Key) has invited his favorite musician, Herb McGwyer (Tom Basden), to his remote island to play a gig. However, when Herb arrives, he discovers that Charles will be the only person attending the gig. But that's not all. Charles has also invited another musician to play ... Nell Mortimer (Carey Mulligan), who is Herb's ex-partner, both professionally and romantically.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:
Parents say ( 3 ):
Kids say ( 1 ):

This heartwarming film perfectly showcases British cinema's ability to blend comedy and pathos with tender precision. Written by the leading duo, Key and Basden, The Ballad of Wallis Island derives most of its comedic elements from Key's loveable Charles and his endearing quirkiness, while Basden's Herb embarks on a reflective journey of self-discovery, delivering both touching and moving moments. The result is a film that will have viewers alternating between wiping away tears and bursting into laughter. There's meaningful exploration of grief, letting go of the past, and human connections throughout. But what elevates the film further are the original songs performed by Herb, which are genuinely impressive and enhance the emotional impact of the story, providing the perfect finishing touch.
