What's the Story?

Lana Cruz (Kate del Castillo) is a Mexican soap opera star working in Hollywood who gets "canceled" after accidentally slugging a fan in THE BIGGEST FAN (La Más Fan). Her agent and only friend, Carmen (Emma Ramos), lands her a role in an art film shooting in Mexico that could help rehabilitate her image and career. But it means a month away from her daughter, Greta (Dariana Delbouis), right around her graduation. The new film is indeed artsy, if not unintelligible, but Lana's biggest hurdle in Mexico might end up being her newly hired and totally unqualified "assistant," Polly (Diana Bovio). Polly is also Lana's biggest fan, and she plans to help the actress rehabilitate her image online. But things don't go exactly according to plan.

This goofy send-up of fame and the film industry generates a few laughs but feels ultimately a little empty. The Biggest Fan relies on the charisma of its popular female leads—del Castillo and Bovio (backed up by comedian Gabriel Nuncio). The story tries to give its characters more significance with backstories revolving around controlling or absentee mothers, and it makes some commentary about cancel culture and the fluctuations of fame. Giddy sequences involving the filming of an "art" movie are funny, but another recent Spanish-language film, Official Competition, did this better and with much more nuance.

  • Families can talk about the online hate Lana experiences in The Biggest Fan, which is the catalyst for the rest of the film's events. Did the portrayal of that feel realistic to you? Why, or why not?

  • Why do you think Lana and Polly were able to bond?

  • What did you make of the portrayal of the "art film" and its quirky director?
