What's the Story?

In THE CUT, a boxer's (Orlando Bloom) return to the big time hinges on him losing weight before a fight. With just six days to do it, his efforts become more extreme as he enlists a tough trainer (John Turturro) to get the job done at any cost.

Is It Any Good?

A movie about a boxer with barely any boxing, this psychological sports thriller instead focuses on the demands athletes face and the sometimes self-destructive drive to meet them. Bloom is intense as The Cut's troubled, unnamed fighter, while Caitríona Balfe's Caitlin watches with helpless concern as her loved one falls apart. Turturro plays the ruthless Boz, an unethical trainer brought in to help the boxer make weight with no regard for his safety or well-being. While Boz occasionally veers toward cartoonish villainy, his results-at-any-cost approach is sadly believable. A cautionary tale of unprocessed trauma, the film lands a hard-hitting message about perspective: what success really means, and whether the price is worth it.
