The Dresden Sun
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
When C and Earth Corporation's goal for global dominance leads to a mercenary heist gone wrong in THE DRESDEN SUN, one ordinary financial analyst finds himself caught in the middle of a deadly scheme of technology espionage, extortion, fraud, and murder.
Is It Any Good?
A thin, convoluted, and chaotic story means that writer/director/editor Michael Ryan's sci-fi passion project falls short. In this cautionary film about the quest for technology and power, Ryan seems to not heed his own warning about curiosity, ambition, and greed. A mashup of too many ideas, too many genres, too many characters, and too many side quests, The Dresden Sun just becomes too much. The results are as painful as the on-screen effects: a blur of flashing lights, an overabundance of "pew pew" guns, and a dystopian cyberpunk world that awkwardly illustrates exactly why this film is labeled an "indie."
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about what message The Dresden Sun is trying to convey about science and technology. Does the film warn against or support pushing the limits of innovation? What lessons can viewers learn from the characters' choices?
How can you tell the difference between curiosity and dangerous obsession/ambition? Have you ever been so focused on something that you ignored the potential risks or consequences?
When is it OK to take risks, and when should someone stop? What would you do if you saw a friend making a risky decision?
What's the appeal of dystopian stories? Why do you think there are so many more of them than there are utopian stories?
