What's the Story?

In THE FAMILY PLAN 2, Dan Morgan's (Mark Wahlberg) past comes back to haunt him and his family again when his criminal head father dies in prison and a previously undisclosed family member appears out of nowhere. Finn (Kit Harington) claims he's Dan's half-brother, and he plans to stake his claim to their massive inheritance, which includes a global crime network. Trouble will follow the Morgans as they try to enjoy the holidays together, first in Buffalo, then in London, where daughter Nina (Zoe Colletti) is studying abroad and has a new boyfriend, Omar (Reda Elazouar), and then in Paris. That includes tech-savvy teen Kyle (Van Crosby) and the littlest, Max (Peter and Theodore Lindsey).

What this budding franchise lacks in plausibility or originality, it partially makes up for with its messages about forgiveness and putting family first. The Family Plan 2 improves on its predecessor by prioritizing the family theme over the action, which is rousing but ultimately secondary and generally predictable. Having said that, moving the action to Europe adds a level of attractiveness to this film. Daughter Nina's new boyfriend, who fancies himself part of the family from day one and calls Wahlberg "Daddy," is also a welcome addition.

  • Why does Dan want to help and get close to Finn, despite everything? Is this a positive or a negative impulse, in your opinion?

  • How does the setting contribute to the action in this film?

  • How would you compare this sequel to its predecessor? Do you think this film was necessary or adds anything new to the narrative? Why, or why not?
