What's the Story?

When Millie (Sydney Sweeney) is hired to work as THE HOUSEMAID for the wealthy Winchester family, it seems like a dream come true. Nina (Amanda Seyfried) and Andrew (Brandon Sklenar) Winchester are welcoming, giving Millie her own room in the attic and the freedom to enjoy their idyllic mansion however she likes. But Millie slowly begins to realize that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

It's twisty, tantalizing, and utterly unpredictable: Feig gives viewers a fantastic "girls' night out" movie in this book-based thriller. This sisterhood story has many secrets, so if The Housemaid is on your must-see list (and this is a recommendation that it should be), then see it as soon as possible, because the only thing you should know is that you have no idea where it's going!

Feig, who's known for consistently creating female-forward films, has crafted an audience howler, and trust that feminists are among those who will likely be cheering the loudest. So, getting down to brass tacks—and without giving anything important away—is The Housemaid a movie to see with your older teenage daughter? Only if you want to have a good time.

  • What are some stereotypes about women that have been perpetuated through entertainment media? Why is empowering representation important?

  • How did you react to the movie's violence? Did it feel necessary to the story? What's the impact of media violence?

  • Do you think the movie's consensual sex scenes were appropriate? How do the filmmakers use them to put viewers in conflict with their own hopes, desires, and morality?

  • Which characters demonstrate grit, courage, and self-control? Why are these important character strengths?
