The Husbands of Rosario
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
In THE HUSBANDS OF ROSARIO, Sari (Kate Alejandrino) is a super-fan of famed movie actor Yogi (Joross Gamboa). She doggedly shows up for his appearances and eventually he asks her out. They fall deeply in love and marry. After a car accident in which Sari loses her pregnancy, we are told he goes through a personality change. Now he immerses himself in every role. When he plays a beggar, he comes home smelling bad, covered with dirt. When he plays a dog, he eats from a bowl on the floor and, we're told, they have sex doggy-style. When he plays a pious priest, he calls his wife a devil when she wants sex and denounces the children's book character she has created, a rainbow chameleon, as a "symbol of gayhood." Later, he plays a gay man and acts out sexually with his male co-star. When Yogi plays a serial killer of women, the marriage and Sari's safety are threatened.
Is It Any Good?
The Husbands of Rosario feels amateur and weak. Storytelling is replaced by lots of telling and not much showing. With little depth of character for us to dig into, the film devolves into utter nonsense. Seven minutes in, Yogi and Sari are in a car crash. Since we barely knew anything about Yogi before his accident, and the accident is treated as a quick blip out of the film's 105 minutes, we never see for ourselves the so-called personality change that the accident is supposed to have caused—we're simply told about it.
And the crash disappears: no aftermath, no hospital scenes, no scenes of Yogi's recovery. In the same telling-not-showing strategy, we hear, "A fan that ended up with her idol—the whole country was shocked." Wow, the whole country? And the filmmakers don't seem to be able to manage keeping track of time, either. Sari tells a friend that she and Yogi have been together "more than a year." This is a surprise because in that brief period, we've seen him make five films. The nonsense just keeps coming.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the reason Sari goads Yogi into violence. Why do you think she does it?
The narrator tells the audience that she has changed. Do you believe that she has? Why, or why not?
The movie suggests we know something about the characters—that Yogi can't separate himself from the roles he plays and that Sari indulges his seemingly harmless habits. Do you believe that Yogi can't control himself? Why, or why not?
